Drowning is the leading cause of all accidental deaths among small children (1 to 4 years of age) and the second leading cause among all children from 1 to 14 years of age, second only motor vehicle accidents.
Drowning can occur in a number of places such as:
- Swimming pools
- Recreational waterways
- Lakes
- Ponds
- Spas
- Hot tubs
- Bathtubs
In non-fatal cases, brain damage generally occurs after four minutes of submersion and an estimated 20 percent of these victims will suffer severe, permanent neurological damage. Negligence plays a part in many drowning and near-drowning cases. This can occur because of lack of supervision, security or a problem with the premises.
